Guinness is Ireland's great beer and the national drink. It is made from roasted barley, water, hops and yeast and it tastes like nothing else in the world. It has to be poured gently with care, allowed to settle before being finished off with a fine creamy head, and then enjoyed slowly. That first mouthful of the cool dark liquid is special every time. Husseys bar has a reputation for serving a great pint of Guinness and that may well be to the fact that it is one of the few places left where the kegs are directly under the counter just inches from the taps – the journey is short - straight from the keg through the cooler to the glass. At only 170 calories per pint it is lighter than most other beers. The Pint Bottle of Guinness is also available at Husseys and is popular with some people.
The pint of Guinness is often referred to as the “Pint of Plain” which has been immortalized in verse below by Myles na gCopaleen
'The Workmans Friend'
When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.
When money's tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.
When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.
When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.
In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN. |
